First steps in intensive rotational grazing livestock at Mas Rajols

As part of the Replication activities of the Life Regenerate project, the Mas Rajols farm in Catalonia is implementing different regenerative agriculture measures. We already informed about the planting of mycorrhized oaks to regenerate a zone with few trees and also to try and obtain truffles. Also, composting practices have been undertaken. This spring the team started with a rotational grazing system in another part of the farm. Although pretty restricted due to COVID-19 the operators were able to create 6 additional plots of each 2 ha, where a maximum of 60 cows were rotated during 2-3 days between each subplot. The rotation took place during the month of April and then the land was let to rest for about 6-8 weeks in order to recover.

In June the harvest will finish of the regenerated grass to increase the hay stock for this coming winter. The operators at Mas Rajols have observed a quick adaptation of the herd, the cows seemed to quickly understand the system and cooperated almost enthusiastically. The idea is to double the surface to a total of 12 plots next year (around the buildings of Mas Rajols) and then start the same process up in the mountain where about 85 ha of pastures are. The Volterra team will be attentive to the developent of this activity and its results.
