Meat tasting at Eco Fields with organic veal meat experts

Egbert Sonneveld attended a meeting in Wekerom in the Netherlands to discuss the market of traditional organic veal meat in the Netherlands and in Spain. The owner Bart Boon and commercial manager Mathijs van Veenschoten received Egbert and Enric Camprubí from Pirinat, the leading organic veal meat producer in Spain, in their product tasting and demonstration room. Enric explained that demand for organic meat in Spain is growing exponentially especially in the supermarkets. In the Netherlands organic veal meat is used in food service.

A good discussion follows on grass fed meat. All agree that ideally the market should move from ‘grain fed’ to ‘grass fed’. In the Netherlands this is difficult because of the very wet climate and the fragmented land while in Spain the strong seasonality between extreme cold and extreme hot weather is the problem. However in Spain this could be bridged by spreading the production all over the country in the different climate zones. This means summer in the mountain areas and winter in the south of Spain.

Both Eco Fields and Pirinat confirm that they will follow the outcome of the Life Regenerate project with great interest.
